From the 70’s, through to the 90’s, Susan Staniforth’s philosophy toward creating art reflected the well-established ideology of “art for art’s sake”. In recent years, her increasing concern about environmental issues has led to a change in the way she views the world and her role as an artist.

Writer Sarah Rich described a similar shift within the art community-at-large in ”Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art”, an article that appeared in the June 17, 2007 edition of Worldchanging Headlines. She wrote: “As social and environmental issues become more and more pervasive in cultural conversations, and sustainability becomes everyone’s concern… practitioners of “fine art” no longer stand isolated in a realm of reflection and suggestion.”

Today Susan believes that she has a responsibility to produce works that go beyond self-expression. This fundamental change in her creative philosophy has precipitated a dramatic shift in the way she approaches her work. As she explores this new paradigm, long-held beliefs, personal interests and creative aesthetics are merging with recently acquired skills and ideas, taking her work in fresh and exciting directions.

Having always been active in her local arts community and concerned with social issues, Susan’s many volunteer works have ranged from co-hosting community TV programmes, to sitting as advisory committee chair for a college fine art programme. A graduate of Visual Arts (Sault College) and Visual Communications (Alberta College of Art and Design), Susan works out of her studios in Fenelon Falls, Ontario as a full-time artist and part-time graphic designer. She boasts numerous fine art awards, has exhibited throughout Canada and in the US, and her works reside in public and private collections. With post-secondary and community teaching experience, Susan is in demand as an art instructor.
